Positive Mental Attitude: Fad or Fact?

For many people, myself included the idea of a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) makes us roll our eyes and give a deep sigh. "Why do I need someone to tell me to be positive? If I want to be annoyed with something I don't want someone preaching at me to be positive."

It has unfortunately been tied into the 'Live, Laugh, Love' category of self-care. Where someone's mum or auntie has the often laughed at quote across the wall of their living room and announce that the house is a 'good vibes only' location. But as I've come to realise, PMA isn't about that. It isn't about forcing people to put on a smile even though they feel sad or about forcing all of those around you to always think that the glass is half full.

I am, little by little, becoming a believer. PMA isn't about forcing yourself to be happy all the time and to just ignore the negative in the hopes that it will go away. No, PMA is about accepting that there is sadness/anger/annoyance etc. in all of us but that sometimes we have to look for the positive so the negative doesn't overtake us. It is also about remembering the bigger picture. In the moment the spilt coffee or missed alarm clock might seem like the end of the world but in reality it is only a small moment that can be acknowledged and then changed for the better.

So in order to replace the ever cringey 'Live, Laugh, Love', I've tried to collect some more helpful quotes to live by.

'Having a positive mental attitude is asking how something can be done rather than say it can't be done' -Bo Bennett

'Don't spend your precious time asking "Why isn't the world a better place?" It will only be time wasted. The question to ask is "How can I make it better?" To that there is an answer. - Leo Buscaglia

'I don't think of all the misery but of the beauty that still remains' - Anne Frank
