Searching for reading inspiration? Look no further!

So many people in the forum were keen to read more and become more informed about topics that interest them. A book is one of the most powerful ways that people can get their message across to people in a way that still feels interesting.

These are some of the books and documentaries that I and the other teachers have read or seen that have inspired us. Feel free to add your own recommendations in the comments!

  • Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men- This is what I am currently reading. Caroline Criado Perez simply takes everyday aspects of our lives like transports, medicine and the workplace and examines the gender bias at work. It might not sound like too much fun but her relaxed style makes this a much easier read than you might think!

  • Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable- This documentary looks at the life of the extraordinary Bethany Hamilton, a victim of a shark attack and how she is inspiring people as a pro surfer, motivational speaker and all-round inspiration.
  • The Diary of a Young Girl- A classic but for good reason. The first time I read Anne Frank's diary I was blown away by her calm descriptions of what must have been a very tense and scary time. She shows us resilience, calm in the face of danger and most importantly hope.
  • I am Greta- Everyone has heard of Greta Thunberg but how much do we actually know about her? This documentary goes behind the scenes and lets us see just how much this fight means to Greta and how much it should mean to all of us.

  • Noughts and Crosses- Malorie Blackman's classic novel which deals in speculative fiction. In this world Africa colonised Europe and so we get to think about just how different our world would be if something in the past had changed.
  • Becoming- A documentary that goes behind the scenes of Michelle Obama's book tour for her autobiography, Becoming, this is a great way to see behind the curtain of what it is like to be so in public eye and how people cope with being thrust into the spotlight.
